General Purpose Wire Rope

General Purpose Wire Rope is a versatile, durable lifting and rigging material engineered for everyday industrial applications. Built to withstand abrasion, crushing, bending fatigue, and general wear, these ropes are commonly used across construction, manufacturing, mining, marine environments, material handling, and logging operations.

Its performance depends on two primary factors:

Strand construction

(the “6 x 7,” “6 x 19,” “6 x 25,” etc.).

Core type
(Fibre Core (FC) or Independent Wire Rope Core (IWRC)).

Different constructions offer varying levels of flexibility, strength, and resistance to crushing, making proper selection essential for safety and efficiency.

Wire Rope Classes

Below are the most common General Purpose Wire Rope constructions offered, along with details and reference links.

6 x 7 Fibre Core

A rigid, abrasion‑resistant rope designed for applications requiring low stretch and high strength. The 6 x 7 construction consists of fewer, larger wires, providing excellent resistance to crushing and deformation while offering limited flexibility.

Typical Uses:

  • Industrial static lines

  • Guy lines

  • Standing rigging

  • Applications where the rope does not run over sheaves frequently

6 x 7 Fibre Core
6 x 19 Seale IWRC

6 x 19 Seale IWRC

A balanced combination of strength, flexibility, and abrasion resistance. The Seale construction features large outer wires for wear resistance and smaller inner wires for flexibility, while the IWRC core enhances strength and crush resistance.

Typical Uses:

  • Winch lines

  • Hoisting

  • Crane operations

  • Heavy‑duty lifting applications

6 x 21 Filler Wire – Fibre Core

This construction uses small filler wires to increase strand stability and flexibility. The fibre core provides cushioning and contributes to better bending fatigue performance.

Typical Uses:

  • Light cranes

  • General lifting

  • Material handling equipment requiring moderate flexibility

6 x 21 Filler Wire – Fibre Core
6 x 25 Filler Wire – Fibre Core

6 x 25 Filler Wire – Fibre Core

With increased filler wire count, this construction provides improved flexibility and fatigue resistance compared to 6 x 7 or 6 x 19. The fibre core adds additional pliability and reduces internal stress.

Typical Uses:

  • Marine applications

  • Slings

  • Winches requiring more flexibility

  • Sheave‑based lifting systems

6 x 25 Filler Wire – IWRC

This version includes an IWRC, significantly enhancing load capacity, crush resistance, and structural stability. The combination of filler wire construction and steel core makes it a high‑performance general‑purpose option.

Typical Uses:

  • Cranes

  • Hoists

  • Rigging requiring high strength and durability

  • Heavy‑load, repetitive lifting environments
